Data is a synthetic being, an android, who serves as a Starfleet officer aboard the USS Enterprise-D and later the USS Enterprise-E in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Created by Dr. Noonien Soong, Data possesses positronic brain, granting him immense computational abilities and a desire to understand humanity.

Data's first appearance was in the pilot episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, "Encounter at Farpoint" (1987). Throughout the series and subsequent films, Data strives to experience emotions and connect with his human colleagues, forming deep bonds, particularly with Captain Picard and Geordi La Forge.

His quest for humanity and his selfless acts define his character arc, making him a beloved and iconic figure in the Star Trek universe. He serves as Science Officer, later Second Officer, on both Enterprises.
